Introduction to California's Sierra Foothills and Central Valley Wine Producing Regions

Sierra Foothills and the California Central Valley

[Sierra Foothills & Central Valley Map Picture] Sierra Foothills and the California Central Valley. The Sierra Foothills wineries are located in Amador, El Dorado, Calaveras, Mariposa, Tuomne, Nevada and Yuba Counties of Northern California. The area that seems to be growing is the wineries in California's Central Valley such as those in the Lodi Appelation.

Relatively isolated from other California wine regions and the ravages of phylloxera, the Sierra Foothills and Amador County in particular has some of the oldest still producing grape vines in some of their old-growth Zinfandel vineyards. The Sierra Foothills and Central Valley with vastly different climats produce very different wines.
